We pay special attention in that a block paved area should be able to accommodate the intended trafficking over its design life, without experiencing significant surface deformation. In order to achieve this, the intended roadway or pavement area must be correctly designed and properly constructed. Close attention to detailing will ensure an aesthetically acceptable block surface able to transmit the applied loads to the structural elements of the pavement layers.

The correct level of compaction of each layer of the block pavement will prevent the formation of ruts throughout its life by maintaining the structural integrity of the surface course, and protecting the pavement layers and subgrade from becoming overstressed.

The main elements of a typical conventional concrete block paved pavement construction are shown in the cross-section above. The road base and capping layers are dependent on the level of trafficking and ground strength respectively, and may not be present in all roadways or pavements.

Before the commencement of any block laying, we inspect the preceding work undertaken i.e. base construction, edge restraints, features and penetrations within the roadway or pavement such as drainage channels, inspection pits, etc., to ensure they are in compliance with the project requirements. We pay particular attention to the base levels and tolerances to ensure that, when the block layer is constructed, overall surface levels and tolerances are achievable. This is to ensure that any non-conformance’s in the processing works will be corrected before the commencing of the block layer construction.

We ensure that block paved areas are restrained at their edges in preventing movement, either of the whole paved area or individual blocks.

The benefits of edge restraints include;

  • Resistance to lateral movement,
  • Prevention in the rotation of the blocks under load, and
  • Restricting loss of laying course material at the boundaries.

As a recommendation, we strongly insist that all industrial and commercial block paving applications, include that edge restraints be laid at all boundaries of the block paved areas, including where block paving joins different flexible materials, such as bituminous bound material.
